Akron, Ohio – Head basketball coach John Groce added another piece to the Akron Zips men's basketball program as Virshon Cotton (Milwaukee, Wisc.) signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Akron.

"Virshon is a guard with a high basketball I.Q. and the gift to score," Groce said. "His ability to make plays off ball screens will be a good fit for our system."

Cotton is a 6-foot-1 combo guard out of national power Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix, Ariz. As a high school senior, Cotton averaged 15 points and six assists per game on 39 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point arc and 88 percent from the free throw line. He helped lead the Bruins to a 33-6 overall record and the 2017 Grind Session High School Basketball National Championship, while being ranked No. 9 in the nation in the MaxPreps Independent poll.

"Virshon can impact the game in multiple ways," Groce said. "He has the unique ability to score at all three levels and can beat defenders off the dribble by his change of pace and excellent ball skills. We are excited to work with Virshon and continue to develop him as a person, student, and player."

Cotton played his junior and sophomore seasons at Milwaukee King High School, averaging 18.1 and 7.6 points per game, respectively. As a junior, Cotton played in 21 games and scored 381 total points, while as a sophomore he played in 25 games and scored 190 points. In 46 games at King, Cotton averaged 12.4 points per game and totaled 571 points. During the offseason, Cotton played AAU with Wisconsin United.
