Akron Zips Travel to Houston for First Round of the National Invitation Tournament

AKRON, Ohio – For the second straight season, the Akron Zips earned an automatic qualifying bid for the National Invitation Tournament as they are scheduled to travel to the University of Houston for first round action on Wednesday, March 15.

The No. 7 seed Zips (26-8) will collide No. 2 seed Cougars (21-10) at 7:30 p.m. ET at Texas Southern's Health and Physical Education Arena, The game will air live on ESPNU.

General Admission Adult tickets can be purchased for $10 with General Admission Youth (18 and under) tickets selling for only $4.

The Zips will be making their seventh appearance in the NIT, the fifth under Dambrot. Akron is 2-6 all-time in the tournament and 2-4 with Dambrot at the helm. Akron has made 12 Division I postseason appearances, including the nine of the last 10 seasons.

Akron last appeared in the NIT in 2016 against Ohio State. The Zips traveled to Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio and forced overtime before falling 72-63.

In 2012, Akron played Northwestern, traveling to Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Zips missed a 3-pointer at the end of regulation for the win as the Wildcats prevailed 76-74.

In 2008, Akron posted a 1-1 record, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., to defeat Florida State 65-60 in overtime on March 18. Four days later, the Zips fell 68-63 to eventual NIT runner-up Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., on March 22.

In 2006, the Zips made their first postseason appearance under Dambrot, defeating Temple 80-73 in overtime on March 14 in Philadelphia. The victory was the first postseason win in program history in the Division I era (since 1980-81). Akron would fall 71-60 at Creighton on March 16 in Omaha, Neb.

The winner of Wednesday's contest advances to second round action against the winner of No. 3 BYU and No. 6 UT-Arlington. Game time and location are to be determined.
