Akron, Ohio – Just 20 days after being named the 22nd head coach for the Akron Zips men's basketball program, John Groce begins to put his stamp on Zips' basketball with the announcement of the first of many signed National Letters of Intent. On Tuesday, Groce welcomed Mark Kostelac to the 2017-18 class.

"We are proud to officially announce Mark as one of the newest editions to the 2017-18 class," Groce said. "He adds size to our frontcourt and has the ability to stretch the defense with his outside shooting and passing abilities."

Kostelac is a 6-11, 250-pound center from Cleveland, Ohio. He comes to Akron after spending a year in Bradenton, Fla. at IMG Academy as a post-grad player. In 2017, Kostelac posted a career-high 18 points and 14 rebounds with four blocks and four assists, and helped lead the IMG National Post Grad team to a 23-8 overall record.

"After spending time with Mark, we knew he would be a good fit for our program," Groce said. "He made the decision to play at IMG after four years at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin. Over the last year, he worked hard in the weight room and with his agilities, which has made him more of an explosive player. IMG did an outstanding job to further his development as a player, and Mark has a great upside. With his passion and determination, he will continue to get better and better."

Prior to his time at IMG, Kostelac was a three-year varsity letter winner at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, graduating in 2016. He earned three North Coast League honorable mention honors from 2014-16 and was named to the 2016 News Herald honorable mention squad. During his senior year, Kostelac led the Lions in total points scored, rebounds, and blocked shots.
